Each painting in this series relies on a fictional voice revealed mostly through a text positioned on a reserved section of unpainted canvas. These texts are composed to appear as fragments of imaginary documents or shards of hidden narratives. My initial motivation was to expose the canvas as a material aspect of conventional painting that I thought might affect an awareness in the viewer of a painting's initial stage as a blank space, not unlike a blank piece of writing paper.
As the series evolved, the subjects I gravitated to seemed to insinuate disguise, pretense and other devices employed in the pursuit of anonymity, solitude or self-preservation.
The series now refects a conscious choice to explore how people choose to self-define.
